The 2012 Mazda RX-8 Spirit R is a very rare vehicle, exclusively available in Japan to commemorate the end of the RX8 lifecycle, only 1000 were built.
Mazda extensively revised the engine for the Spirit R. This involved incorporating a high-pressure fuel pump and enhancing cooling with a larger radiator and faster fans. The cold air intake system received upgrades, and the S-DAIS now features a secondary intake port that activates at 5,500 rpm to increase airflow. The oil-metering pump was also improved to deliver more oil to the rotors. Additionally, a less restrictive stainless steel exhaust with larger 3.5-inch tips was installed, along with a Tochigi Fuji torque vectoring limited-slip differential. The ignition system was upgraded to utilize high-output revision-C coils for improved performance and engine response. In terms of suspension, a bespoke track-ready setup with Bilstein dampers and a urethane-foam-injected front suspension cross member was implemented. Weight reduction was a key focus, resulting in the use of aluminum for the front hood, rear doors, and trunk lid. Furthermore, a magnesium steering frame and lightweight carbon fiber prop shaft were integrated. The manual transmission variant received exclusive lightweight red leather SPIRIT R bucket seats from Recaro, complemented by forged 19-inch BBS bronze aluminum alloy wheels.
